The object of this book is to present the state of the art and to summarize the most recent advances in the structure and dynamics of vortices. This subject has indeed recently made some remarkable progress, particularly thanks to stu- dies of turbulence, where coherent structures have been shown to play an important role. The book presents four ge- neral reviews on the experimental, numerical, theoretical, and 2D-vortex aspects. In addition to these reviews, a se- ries of articles describe a cross-section of recent work. Some of these studies are concerned with related fields, such as turbulence, aerodynamics, wakes, geophysics, mixing, and particle dynamics. Autorentext The reader will find in this book all information concerning recent and ongoing research into vortices and important related fields. It will appeal to scientists and researchers as well as engineers. Inhalt Non-homogeneous/Non-local Two-Dimensional Dynamics.- Numerical Simulation of Vortex Flows.- Of Vortices and Vortical Layers: An Overview.- Visualizations of Stretched Vortices.- Three-Dimensional Stabilization of a Vortex Street in Viscoelastic Liquids.- Bursting of a Swirling Jet Stemming from a Localized Perturbation.- Computation of Equilibria Between Two Corotating Nonuniform Vortices.- Experimental Observation of the Multipolar Instability Inside a Deformed Elastic Cylinder.- Absolute/Convective Instabilities and Spatial Growth in a Vortex Pair.- Ultrasound Scattering by Forced Laminar Wakes.- A Numerical Study of the Elliptic Instability of a Vortex Pair.- On the Stability of Vortices in an Ideal Gas.- Three-Dimensional Instabilities of a Counterrotating Vortex Pair.- Acoustic Characterization of a Stretched Vortex in an Infinite Medium.- Merging and Three-dimensional Instability in a Corotating Vortex Pair.- Pressure Measurements in a Stretched Vortex.- Using Cavitation as a Probe of Low-Pressure Filaments in Turbulence.- On the Feedback of Vorticity on Stretching.- Characterisation of Vortex Flow Inside an Entrained Cavity.- Structure, Dynamics and Turbulence Features of a Confined Vortex.- A Criterion of Centrifugal Instabilities in Rotating Systems.- Large Scale Power Fluctuations and Dynamic Properties of Isolated Vortices in a Turbulent Flow.
